Membership benefits

IPTA is the only professional body solely representing patent and trade mark attorneys in Australia  and is managed by members of the profession on a voluntary basis. A key focus of IPTA is the promotion and safeguarding of IP rights in Australia, while endeavouring to secure the interests of the patent and trade mark attorney as a whole, as well as innovators and users of the IP system.

To maintain the strength and future of the patent and trade mark attorney profession in Australia, IPTA encourages all eligible attorneys to be members of IPTA. Our profession is relatively small and having a strong membership ensures our views are heard, especially by Government when considering new legislation, and the ongoing importance of our role in the IP arena is recognised.

Membership of IPTA provides the following benefits:

  • Access to continuing professional education resources of the highest standards, including regular webinars.
  • Information about current issues within the profession and legislation changes in relation to IP.
  • Opportunities to contribute to submissions (e.g., to IP Australia and IPONZ) on legislative and practice changes in Australia, New Zealand and internationally.
  • Assistance with resolving ethical issues and settling disputes between or involving members.
  • Social and networking events for members, including a network for junior members to encourage involvement and contribution to the profession at an early stage.
  • Access to our membership portal, which includes previous webinars, submissions and other important information.
  • Discounted registration at our annual conference, which features continuing professional education in IP law, ethics and practice management, as well as social events.
  • Access to support, including ethics advice, wellbeing support, emergency practice support, and more.
  • Opportunities to participate in IPTA committees and for Fellows to join Council.
