Registration for the 2025 course has now closed. The Next Course is expected to commence 3 August 2026.
Expressions of Interest for the 2026 are now open.
The Course has been developed in response to overwhelming feedback in the industry that it would be useful to provide some formal education for those persons supporting attorneys and lawyers working in the field of IP law.
The IP Administrator’s Course will cover 14 Units, comprising:
- Unit 1: Introduction to IP Administrator’s Course, and Introduction to IP.
- Units 2 to 5: Patents (Introduction; AU; NZ; PCT).
- Units 6 to 9: Trade Marks (Introduction; AU; NZ; International Trade Mark – Madrid Protocol).
- Units 10 to 12: Designs (Introduction; AU; NZ).
- Unit 13: Domain Names / Business Names.
- Unit 14: Practical Sessions with IP Australia and IPONZ
Candidates will receive training on the underlying principles, the essential legal background and the practice of IP Administration. The Course encourages the development of knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of the structure, personnel and functions of the various departments usually found in a firm, including the work of patent attorneys and support staff. The Course encourages utilisation and expansion of candidates’ existing knowledge, and supports candidates in their day-to-day role and career aspirations.
The Course will run from August 2026 until March 2027, with an examination held in April 2027. Successful candidates will be awarded a Certificate from IPTA.
Places in the course are limited. We encourage early expressions of interest with an indication of the number of candidates you may wish to send to the course from your firm/workplace.
