Many products created today aren’t technologically significant, but are aesthetically appealing and incorporate new features – including shape, configuration, pattern or ornamentation.

These products could possibly be registered as Industrial Designs.

For example, you may be able to obtain registration for:

  • New, original vehicle tyre patterns
  • The shape of a lamp base or piece of furniture
  • New, original configurations of aluminium extrusions to be used in fabricating building products

As with patentable inventions, you should apply to register a design before publicly disclosing the article (to which the design applies).

However, you may sell or otherwise disclose the article after your application has been filed, and before you obtain registration.
